Important update for Patients with Asthma
Do you or your child have asthma?
If so, please take a moment to consider the questions below:
– Does asthma limit your or your child’s daily activities?
– Are you using a reliever inhaler (blue inhaler) more than 3 times a week?
– Are asthma symptoms waking you or your child at night at least once a week?
– Have you had a recent asthma attack or needed oral steroids?
If you answered “yes” to any of these, your current asthma treatment may need updating.
There Are New National Asthma Guidelines
What’s new?
>>Children aged 12 and under:
Should use a preventer inhaler (steroid) twice daily along with a reliever (blue) inhaler as needed. If your child is using both but still has poor control, please book an asthma review.
>>Patients aged 12 and above:
Now advised to use a single combined inhaler (containing both a steroid and a fast-acting reliever called formoterol), replacing the previous two-inhaler method.
**IMPORTANT:
Using only the blue reliever inhaler (Salbutamol) is no longer recommended. Regular use without a preventer can increase the risk of asthma attacks and even asthma-related deaths and so patients with asthma should not be on a reliever inhaler alone.
