Shortlist revealed for RCN Nursing Awards 2021

Awards shortlist showcases the best of nursing and the profession’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic

The finalists for the prestigious RCN Nursing Awards 2021 have been revealed, showcasing excellence in the profession and nurses’ commitment in the continuing pandemic.

The profession’s top accolades celebrate innovation, skill and dedication in nursing across 15 categories, including Child Health, Learning Disability Nursing, Mental Health Nursing and Team of the Year.

Practice nurse Helen Hurst has been identifying military veterans, screening them for anxiety and depression and offering them the most appropriate treatment and support through social prescribing. After securing funding for the project, she trained colleagues on how to identify veterans and signpost them to relevant services and implemented an anxiety and depression screening tool. An information leaflet was developed and a section on the surgery’s website was created during lockdown. All veterans were followed up by phone calls while the surgery was closed and an ‘insight night’ was organised where a veteran shared their experience with the practice team. Veterans who have been helped by the initiative have said they feel supported by the practice.

Nurse Helen Hurst says:
“Since the end of the project, we have carried on identifying our Military Veterans, any new ones registering get invited in for an emotional health check and I give them the leaflet that we produced.
I have also attended some webinar sessions with the RCGP and Veteran NHS Healthcare and shared with the GP’s about Op Courage. I also did a short course on Transition from the Armed Forces with York St John to gain a better understanding of what they face on Civvy Street.
New NHS services have been added to the our Military Veteran EMIS template and I’m putting a file together for reference for all services available, so that the GP’s know who to refer to.
With Karen and Sonia Holdsworth from One Wirral, we are looking at social isolation in our Military Veterans, we have linked in with Project Frontline Support CIC and spoken with Andrew Hawkins and Aaron from the online charity, who are both Veterans. We would like to create a Veterans Hub on Wirral with Services in one place for all to access! In its planning stages at the moment. Have tagged HSW on their Facebook page!
This weekend I am doing a Loaded March with BMF for the homeless!

A couple of our student Nurses have done a spoke placement with Richard Hodgins who works for Walking with the Wounded at the NHS High Intensity Service that is part of Op Courage. I have also linked in with Simon Lock at WWTW and shared some top tips on registering with the RCGP Veteran Friendly Accreditation and getting other Practices on board.
Why I applied for the RCN Award was to raise awareness of Military Veterans and make sure they are coded as such at our GP Practices and give back to a Community that Serves to protect us as a Nation.”
Well done Helen!
